I posted this in our school “prep” group but wanted to post it here because this particular forum is open to the public. Feel free to share with any family/friends that aren’t on the app/website and may be interested in this sort of thing. 🙂
In the past, when purchasing water filters, I only focused on the “what if”, “grid down” scenarios. After listening to “Follow the Science” - I HIGHLY recommend it - as well as doing a deep dive into our water supply & systems, my focus has widened, so to speak. Listen to the video clip & you might agree (forgive the quality, I was filming the audiobook in my bathroom 😬. )
To be honest, I was pretty grossed out. I immediately began my search for something I could use out at a restaurant, without looking like I should have a tin foil hat on. 😂
In going down that rabbit hole, I was astonished at what’s allowed in our tap water. If you’ve ever looked at your area’s annual water report, you will see that most routinely exceed what is called “acceptable levels” of very harmful chemicals & substances. Not to mention the added chlorine and fluoride that you and your children are ingesting. I won’t get into all of the details and why this is allowed but I encourage you to do your own research.
UPDATE: I reached out to the LifeStraw company about what the “Sip” ACTUALLY filter. They do not filter chemicals, fluoride, heavy metals, or pharmaceuticals. They do filter bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. I was quite disappointed they didn’t filter more but still think it’s a great choice to carry in the car or have on hand should we get a “boil” order. They said it DOES filter murky water but it’s best not to filter muddy water. That being said, I DID find a filter for Stanley style cups that does have an activated charcoal filter that does filter the gunk out of tap water. It cannot be used for pond or dirty water though. I’ve added the “PureSip” link to the end of this post.
Original info - I purchased one of these and hope to get more as Christmas gifts for family and friends. These straws are very portable (and pretty normal looking) but are not good for filtering “dirty, pond” type water. However, they work amazing in filtering out all the junk in tap water (see video above). https://amzn.to/4fYhp6D
For the longer term, “I need to filter pond water” situation, for the money, I like this one: https://amzn.to/3Z42UHx
Yes, there are “better” water filters (like Katydyn or Berkey) but they’re also out of my price range and I try to suggest products that I have actually used. If you can afford a more expensive brand, I’ve read excellent things on this portable one but haven’t used it myself: https://amzn.to/3Z5kE5f.
For economical and portable “pond” water filtering, I like this one: https://amzn.to/3AXv3Ik or this one: https://amzn.to/3CUngLO I like that each family member can have their own and both work with the electric filter above too! If you’ve found any good deals or have suggestions, feel free to comment! 🥰

Thank you for this. Very helpful. Please keep sharing things like this. There is so much that our local, state, and national governments do not share or are not honest with us about, in many things, but especially our food and water sources. We all need to be educated by each other as to things we personally learn and discover and share this extremely valuable information. So please, keep sharing and thank you again. PM
